Wigan Warriors and Athletic are collaborating to enhance the Orrell ground.

Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic have unveiled plans to transform Edge Hall Road Stadium in Orrell into a

training hub for women’s rugby league and football. Formerly the home of Orrell RUFC, the site has been dormant

since 2019 when Wigan Warriors relocated their training base to Robin Park Arena. Wigan Athletic Women will

make use of the revamped venue for their home matches, which will see a comprehensive refurbishment of the

clubhouse and its surroundings.

The initiative will also support the growth of the inaugural Wigan Athletic women’s team, according to a joint

statement from both clubs. Gregor Rioch, Wigan Athletic’s sporting director, emphasized the significance of this

move in prioritizing women’s football and sports more broadly within the community.

Kris Radlinski, CEO of Wigan Warriors, echoed Rioch’s sentiments, highlighting the substantial progress in women’s

sports within the town. He underlined the ongoing commitment of the rugby side to advancing women’s rugby,

citing significant investments in coaching and medical infrastructure led by head coach Denis Betts. The

establishment of a dedicated facility marks a significant stride forward for their women’s performance program.
