In an intense match against Wigan, Saints rediscover who they are.
Paul Wellens, the manager of SAINTS, feels that his injured team found their identity again in Wigan’s derby victory last night, following disappointing back-to-back losses to Salford and Castleford.
Hurt by the response to the depressing home defeat the previous week, Wellens changed up the lineup, starting young full-back Harry Robertson in place of Lewis Dodd at scrum half.
When Jack Welsby and Jonny Lomax paired in the second half, there seemed to be a significant improvement.
Robertson had backed up Curtis Sironen to dart upfield, and Saints seized the lead with a magnificent try from Welsby.
Waqa Blake’s score midway through the second half gave Saints the lead once more, despite Wigan’s Jake Wardle try making it 6-6 at halftime.

..”Obviously the lads are disappointed that they’ve lost a game, but in terms of the mental attitude and how you approach big games, I thought we got everything we needed from the group today,” Wellens said.
“I think it was the ideal response tonight regarding the level of dedication these players have to helping this club succeed. A lot of us have been asked questions in recent weeks.
“These games are usually decided by slim margins, but after tonight’s performance, no one will doubt anyone’s work ethic, and that ought to serve as a model going ahead. Tonight, we reunited with our true selves.”
