After New York scored in the sixth minute, Gil equalized midway through the first half. Tomás Chancalay provided a precise cross into the penalty box, which Gil nodded in for his first headed goal in MLS. With his first assist in a Revolution uniform, Chancalay has now scored in three straight games. He led New England’s offensive tonight, taking three shots, two of which were on target.
The Revolution had momentum as halftime approached, but New York retook the lead with a penalty kick from Emil Forsberg in the 43rd minute, after Henry Kessler was called for a handball in the box. New York increased its lead to 3-1 in the 84th minute, but Vrioni reduced the distance with a left-footed goal in the 90th minute. Vrioni scored with assistance from midfielders Emmanuel Boateng, who now has 25 career assists in MLS, and Ian Harkes. The Red Bulls sealed the 4-2 victory by scoring a fourth goal in stoppage time as the Revolution pressed for an equalizer.
