On Friday, the Chicago Cubs promoted fellow right-hander Porter Hodge from Triple-A Iowa and placed reliever Colten Brewer on the 15-day disabled list. Brewer, 31, was designated as an IL on Tuesday with a low back strain. In his seven appearances this season, he has a 3.09 ERA, no decisions, and 12 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings pitched.
In 91 career appearances (four starts), Brewer is 2-5 with a 4.78 ERA for the San Diego Padres (2018), Boston Red Sox (2019–21), New York Yankees (2023), and Cubs. The 23-year-old Hodge has not yet made his big league debut. In his 12 bullpen appearances this season, split between Iowa and Double-A Tennessee, he is 1-1 with a 4.80 ERA. 2019 saw the Cubs choose Hodge in the thirteenth round.
