St Mirren Football Club is excited to announce that Shaun Rooney has agreed to a two-year contract, marking our
first signing for the 2024/25 season. Shaun, aged 27, will officially join the squad in early July after his tenure with
English League One’s Fleetwood Town, where he accumulated 80 appearances and scored eight goals.
Beginning his career in Dundee United’s youth setup, Shaun later transitioned to Queen’s Park in 2013 under the guidance of former Saints boss Gus MacPherson. He then moved to Dunfermline, contributing to their Scottish League One triumph in 2015/16. Shaun’s journey led him to York City before returning to Scotland with Queen of the South and later Inverness Caledonian Thistle. His standout performances at Caley earned him a move to St Johnstone, where he solidified his status as a club legend by scoring crucial goals in their Cup Final victories during the 2020/21 season, securing both the League and Scottish Cup.
Expressing his enthusiasm on stmirren.com, Shaun expressed his delight in joining a team like St Mirren, especially following their recent confirmation of European football. Reflecting on the club’s interest in him two years prior, Shaun acknowledged his prior discussions with the manager before opting for Fleetwood. However, he now feels it’s the right time to return “home” to St Mirren, where he had previously been on trial.
