When asked if he can truly challenge Jack Butland at Rangers, Liam Kelly responded.
Liam Kelly, the goalkeeper for the Rangers who is back, gave an open response when asked if he can challenge teammate Jack Butland for the starting position this year.
Kelly left Motherwell after his contract expired a few weeks ago, and he signed a two-year contract at Ibrox.
After a few turbulent years, the Scotland international spent three years at Fir Park and became a regular performer in the Scottish Premiership.
That trying time came after his Rangers departure in 2018. Kelly came up through Govan’s youth systems, where he played on loan at East Fife and Livingston to acquire experience.
He tried his hardest to win over the Rangers management group, but in the end, he was unable to
However, Kelly ultimately settled down in Motherwell, and his performance in Lanarkshire was evident enough to persuade Philippe Clement to sign Kelly to fill Jack Butland’s backup role for the upcoming campaign.
In his first season with the team, Butland won Rangers’ Player of the Year for 2023–2024, demonstrating beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the best goalkeeper in Scotland.
Kelly is aware that the former Manchester United star will have him covered this season, but he is not sorry about his decision to rejoin Rangers.

Kelly commented, “You are giving up a lot, especially with how well big Jack played last year,” to The Rangers Review during the team’s pre-season training camp in the Netherlands.
“He was without a doubt the top goalie in the league the previous season, as everyone knows. You are just one person away from participating in European and Old Firm games. I’m not in a position to deny that opportunity.
“Since my contract is for two years, I will still be young when it expires. I’m hoping that it plays out so I can stay here for a lot longer than that.
