Philippe Clement will be under “massive pressure” at Rangers this season to deliver results on the pitch.
After taking over at Ibrox in October 2023 to succeed Michael Beale, Clement won the Scottish League Cup. However, although initially narrowing a significant deficit, Clement lost both the title and the Scottish Cup final to Celtic, their bitter rivals.
With four agreements now signed and moves for Liam Kelly and Hamza Igamane on the horizon, the Belgian is now hoping to add his own mark to the team this summer. However, Boyd acknowledged to Sky Sports on June 27 that he is under pressure to perform well on the field.
“Philippe Clement has performed admirably on the field,” he remarked. “He doesn’t need another headache—he’s going to be under a lot of pressure to perform for the Rangers this season.”
Philippe Clement needs to be different to previous Rangers managers.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst was rightfully fired after making the emotional decision to sign Michael Beale, which ultimately backfired, despite his strong start and his ability to defeat Celtic in the Europa League.
Although Clement has so far shown that he is superior to both of them, he still has issues defeating Celtic, and he must now find a means to overcome them in order to avoid joining the ranks of their predecessors.
His job has undoubtedly become harder without Ibrox accessible for the first month of the season, but he would argue that’s not an excuse for not winning football games.
He must start strong and with victories as a poor start will put him under more pressure from supporters and the media. He has an early opportunity to allay those fears with Celtic in the fourth game of the SPFL season, and he needs to seize it.
In other Rangers news, the team will speak with the SPFL as soon as possible because of the commotion at Ibrox.
