TE From the Bills Signs With the Bears During the “Comeback” Season
Before the 2023 NFL season, tight end Tommy Sweeney, like many other former Buffalo Bills players, made his way to the Meadowlands to join the New York Giants.
But after a promising preseason, Sweeney—the seventh-round pick of the Bills in the 2019 NFL Draft—collapsed at practice. Sweeney “had a medical event and is under the care of medical professionals in the Giants athletic training room,” according to a statement released by the organization in late August.
In Buffalo, Sweeney primarily functioned as Dawson Knox’s backup. He caught 18 of 26 targets for 165 yards and one score in 24 games, with 4 starts. Under head coach Brian Daboll, he appeared to have a more steady job as a pass-blocking tight end in New York, but clearly, things took a bad turn. In November, the Giants finally cut him.
Despite being wheeled off the field, Sweeney was described by the squad as “stable, alert, and conversant.” The 28-year-old is prepared to make a comeback despite missing the full 2023 NFL season.
