After the Yankees’ defeat by the Red Sox, Aaron Boone speaks candidly about a serious thorn in their side.
Following a thrilling 14-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox at home on Saturday to end a four-game losing streak, the New York Yankees appeared to be rising again, but on Sunday night they were crushed by their fiercest rivals, losing 3-0.
Two phrases best describe the Yankees’ series finale loss: Devers, Rafael. With a double in the eighth for insurance, and a home run in the seventh to break a scoreless tie, the star third baseman for the Red Sox went 3-for-4. The fact that the Red Sox scored all of their runs in that game on solo home runs is concerning for New York’s overall defensive independent pitching metric.
When questioned about his team’s inability to contain Devers’ strong bat during the postgame news conference, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked whether there was anything else New York could have done to quiet the three-time All-Star.
“I promise, we look at that quite a bit. That being said, there are occasions when a guy enters a season with a bang. Boone remarked, “He’s a great player” (via Yankees Videos).
On the flip side, we occasionally witness that. With a few of our guys, you know. He’s hurting with us, therefore we devote a lot of time and energy into where to acquire them most of the time.
During the news conference, someone asked Boone and the Yankees whether they had considered simply walking Devers. Boone dismissed the notion.
Boone did acknowledge, though, that the Yankees discussed substituting Luke Weaver for Luis Gil in the seventh inning, as they ultimately did. The issue was that they almost immediately paid a high price for it when Ceddanne Rafaela crushed a home run off the right-handed reliever.
In that game, the Yankees might have easily merely supplied Gil and his pitchers with plenty of runs. Rather, Aaron Judge and company were unable to replicate the magic they shown in the second leg of the series at the plate. Juan Soto and Ben Rice went a combined 1-for-8 with two strikeouts and
The Yankees, who are now 55-37 and have dropped 10 of their previous 13 games, will try to get back on track when they begin a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.
After the Yankees’ defeat, fans respond to Aaron Boone’s remarks on Rafael Devers.
“It’s not complicated… TRAIL HIM. “You clown, get fired,” @joestheticss remarked.
“Let’s say Devers has been controlling us for the last three to four years, and you can’t seem to find a way to get rid of him? It’s very funny 😂,” said @PG_Vlogs245.
“Boone, just Boone, simple.”
Regarding @pt5PastLightspd: “In and up. He’s going to have an awkward at-bat if he walks. Add the odd hip-high/mid-thigh warmer, about 4 inches off the plate. He’ll shift,
