Without Timo Werner’s transfer, Manchester United would not have gotten what they needed.

Although Timo Werner was linked to a move to Manchester United this month, the forward’s signing with Tottenham means he might face them on Sunday.

This weekend against Manchester United, Timo Werner might make his Tottenham debut.

For Timo Werner, the summer of 2020 must seem like a very long time ago. The Germany striker was one of the game’s most exciting possibilities at the time. The prolific forward was long-rumored to be interested in Manchester United and headed to Liverpool, but ultimately decided to join Chelsea. His career path has only ever gone in one direction since then.

Despite the aggressive promotion of Werner’s arrival on loan for the remainder of the season on Tottenham’s social media channels, the truth is that they have recruited a player who has essentially forgotten how to score goals. It’s hardly a given that Ange Postecoglou will possess the Midas touch again.

Werner scored 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga appearances when the 2019–20 season came to a close. He scored 95 goals in 159 games throughout his final four seasons at RB Leipzig, spanning from 20 to 23 years of age. Then he lost his scoring touch.

With 21 league goals in his last 91 games, the 27-year-old is back in the Premier League. In his two years with Chelsea, a forward who was previously thought to be a lethal finisher became a laughingstock, managing just 10 goals in the Premier League out of an xG total of 18.
