In a recent interview, Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay discussed the hidden costs associated with being a professional football player.
The 27-year-old, a United academy graduate, made his debut in the first squad in May 2017 under Jose Mourinho’s coaching.
He has since made 233 appearances across all competitions and scored 25 goals, solidifying his status as an inconsequential part of the senior squad.
In a recent interview with the High Performance Podcast, McTominay discussed the unspoken expenses associated with being a professional football player.
“There are definitely challenging aspects to your life—the football side of it, the things your family sees online that are negative,” he remarked.
“It’s a challenging one, but my family is actually pretty good at things like that, to an extent. However, I’m not there every time they turn the iPad on or your grandparents do, so there might be something bad on there.”
McTominay has performed admirably this campaign.
During the summer transfer window, the Scotland international came dangerously close to departing Manchester United.
The Red Devils were holding out for £45 million, but West Ham United made a £30 million bid to sign him. Eventually, a deal fell through, and he chose to remain at Old Trafford.
But this season, the 27-year-old has witnessed a return to form.
This season, he has played in 24 games in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing an assist.
When Rasmus Højlund scored against Tottenham Hotspur in their most recent Premier League match, the midfielder shared the top goal scorer title for the Red Devils.
In the English premier league, he has also demonstrated exceptional defensive performance, averaging 1.7 tackles, 3.1 ball recoveries, and 1.8 clearances per game.
Although McTominay has been on and off the team, he is an excellent member of the squad.
