Even though renowned Scot Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United governed with an iron grip at Old Trafford, his players occasionally poked fun at the legendary Scot. Peter Schmeichel still regrets that day.
At Old Trafford, the legendary Manchester United manager, known for his hairdryer treatments, reigned with an iron fist. Furthermore, it appears that no one left the Theatre of Dreams without being the target of one of his tantrums.
One of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, Schmeichel, 60, captained United to their storied Triple Crown in 1999. But his boss wasn’t always impressed by the huge Dane.
United blew a three-goal lead at Anfield in the 1993–94 season, and the teams drew 3–3. And most of the blame fell on Schmeichel.
Schmeichel stated on William Hill’s Up Front with Simon Jordan, “I came off the pitch and we were 3-0 up and although it should have been seven or eight – we ended up drawing 3-3.” “We just kind of stopped playing for whatever reason, and you can’t do that at Anfield, so I felt like I got us close for a while.”
“Then, before you enter the dressing room, your emotions become jumbled, and that particular day, I was the target of bullying.
“By then, I realised that I was one of the strongest characters in the dressing room, which is why the manager picked on me a lot.”
Schmeichel, however, did not simply stand by and absorb Ferguson’s rage this time.
The Dane went on, “Why me? My brain was totally fried that day, and I just couldn’t handle it. “Look around, you could literally do that to anyone else in here, but not me, I kept us in it,” was my thought at the time. That’s how I felt.
“I’m one of those guys that believe whatever happens in the dressing room should stay in the dressing room, so I said things to him that I shouldn’t have.”
“Are you able to refute him? Every single time. Was he trying to find it? Every single time. before the changing area? Every single time. It kind of made him appreciate you. Just this one instance, I was in error and was unaware of it.”
