Gambia was abandoned, heartbroken and useless.
Gambia, with Andre Onana sitting on the bench and spectating, had undoubtedly the superior side in the first half and had several great opportunities, but their wastefulness prevented them from taking the lead.
Fabrice Ondua, filling in for his cousin Onana, made a fantastic stop on the spin with excellent reactions to preserve the game tied going into halftime.
Georges-Kevin N’Koudou was open at the back post when a deep ball reached him, but his rasping shot rattled the crossbar and rebounded clear, giving Cameroon their best opportunity of the half after the break.
Karl Toko-Ekambi headed home an incredible N’Koudou delivery to break the tie as the momentum continued to build. However, Gambia persisted in pressing, and they surprisingly equalised in the 71st minute when Ablie Jallow volleyed in a fantastic pass to leave Ondua stuck.
Moments later, they added a well-earned second that sent their players to tears when Ebrima Colley scored after being slipped through one-on-one.
However, Cameroon equalised just one minute after the restart when James Gomez tragically scored an own goal while attempting to clear a pass. And in the closing moments, Christopher Wooh seemed to steal it for Cameroon as he headed a corner from N’Koudou into the bottom corner.
Muhammad Sanah appeared to have given Gambia an equaliser in the 94th minute, but it was evident that the ball left his hand and sank into the bottom corner. After that, he was booked, which was one of the last moves in a very surprising conclusion to the match.
