It didn’t take Rasmus Hojlund long to grant one of his wishes in the New Year, as he assisted Marcus Rashford in scoring a goal against Tottenham.
The youthful centre striker recently spoke with Inside United, the official club publication, at Carrington about his success at Old Trafford thus far and expressed a desire to return the favour by helping Rashford out.
Since the Denmark international signed from Atalanta in the summer, the two have been getting to know one other on the pitch.
On Sunday, Hojlund scored his second goal in as many Premier League games. Rashford’s incisive play set up the opportunity, but the England player was not given credit for the assist.
But the no. 10 did set up Rasmus’s first two goals for the team, against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, and this was obviously something the former FC Copenhagen striker had been thinking about.
A few days prior to our Emirates FA Cup match against Wigan Athletic, the striker was questioned about his efforts to forge bonds with his teammates, especially with Rashford, since they appear to be gelling nicely in the attack.
Hojlund said to Inside United, “I think you try to get the understanding of how every team-mate’s game is.” “As you become more accustomed to one another, your performance on the pitch will improve.
“And then you two will become unstoppable at some point. Thus, I believe that each of us is motivated to become knowledgeable about and comprehend the other’s game.”
Rasmus acknowledged that these things do take time to get the combinations flowing and expressed his desire to provide some ammunition for Rashford to finish.
“Sure, it’s not something you get from one day to the other,” he said. “But once more, I believe we are making progress. These days, I believe that Marcus and I in particular try to locate each other.
“I believe he has helped me out a few times as well. So hopefully I can help him out a couple of times too.”
That was the case over the weekend when Hojlund’s comeback enabled the homegrown attacker to guide his finish past Guglielmo Vicario after Rashford executed a deft one-two inside the Tottenham box.
Despite taking United’s lead for the second time in the game, Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser early in the second half meant that United could not win three points.
But, there are encouraging indications that the assault is beginning to click, and we anticipate seeing Hojlund maintain this outstanding form. After our winter break, we have the Emirates FA Cup match against either Newport County or Eastleigh coming up.
