After his loan stint at La Liga side Getafe expires, Mason Greenwood is expected to secure a permanent transfer away from Manchester United during the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old England international left Manchester United in September to sign a season-long loan with La Liga team Getafe. The Premier League club conducted an internal investigation the prior month, and he mutually agreed to leave Old Trafford.
Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm after his arrest in January 2022. In February 2023, all allegations were withdrawn before to United commencing their own inquiry.

Greenwood made a temporary trade to Getafe and is now a regular. The forward was sent off during Getafe’s 2-0 home loss to Rayo Vallecano earlier this month, despite having five goals and four assists in 17 outings.

Getafe is keen to sign him to a long-term contract despite the red card. It’s also thought that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are keeping an eye on his development. With 18 months remaining on his contract, it’s unknown how much United will ask for the player.

Greenwood recently discussed his time in Spain on the Getafe YouTube channel after being named the club’s Player of the Month. “It’s all good,” the former United player declared. “I adjusted really rapidly. I was taken under the wing of teammates and have been content ever since, coming here to train and participate in the games. I’m content.”

He went on: “I value the supporters very much. The greatest sensation I’ve had thus far was when I scored my first goal at this stadium; it meant a lot to me, and I could hear the supporters cheering. We always value the fans because they came out in large numbers to see our training day. When they’re backing us, they’re like an additional man on the pitch.”

Getafe wants to sign Greenwood for the long run, even though other teams are interested in signing him. Jose Bordalas, the Getafe manager, stated last month that Greenwood “is a different player, with a lot of talent.” However, talent is not the most important factor in football.

“It requires more effort than skill. We will be able to assess his true ability when he reaches 100%, but he is qualified to compete in any major. Since he was aware that he had been out of work for a while, without playing, and essentially without training, he fit in well with the team thanks to his patience and calm demeanour.

However, we had faith in him due to his skill and experience. Choosing a player at this level at Getafe is difficult, if not impossible. And, well, we’re betting on him in this case.

“We are happy and content because we have a great player, he is a good boy, he has fitted in really well and he just needs to learn a little more Spanish.”
