After his antics last week, Chris Sutton feels that Marcus Rashford of Manchester United has demonstrated that he “has no respect” for Erik ten Hag or any of his teammates.
After Marcus Rashford’s visit to a Belfast nightclub last week, Chris Sutton ripped into the Manchester United striker, accusing him of having “no respect” for boss Erik ten Hag.
The 26-year-old England player is suspected of having gone on a “12-hour drinking session” before to missing training last week after visiting a former teammate in Northern Ireland. He then missed United’s FA Cup match on Sunday, which ended in a 4-2 victory over Newport County.
On Monday morning, United issued a statement saying that Rashford had “taken responsibility for his actions” and that the “internal disciplinary matter” was now resolved.
However, this hasn’t stopped experts from criticising Rashford’s attitude; Sutton is among them. He claims that Rashford thinks he will outlast Ten Hag at Old Trafford before calling his actions “utterly disgraceful” in his editorial for The Mail.
“Marcus Rashford is similar to a good few Manchester United players right now,” he added. He believes he is invincible. He has previously engaged in misdemeanour behaviour. It hasn’t stopped at all. He shows no regard for either his teammates or the manager. That’s the main point.
“He probably believes he will outlive Ten Hag anyhow, but from what I can tell, he is insane. Now, Marcus Rashford is 26 years old. He doesn’t seem to respect the manager at all. Is he not making it very obvious how he feels?
“While I’m sorry about Ten Hag, we already know how this is going to end. Eventually, Rashford will replace Ten Hag, and all Manchester United supporters will once again adore Marcus since he truly is a “Manchester United through and through.” However, his behaviour has been completely shameful.”
During a Tuesday morning appearance on BBC Breakfast, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also criticised Rashford’s actions and encouraged the striker to cool down.
“That happened quite a bit when I was at the club,” the man stated. Most football players ought to and will go out for drinks and a night on the town. That is not a problem for me, but it’s about choice and timing.
“We were defeated at home by Man City, as I stated following the match. He probably went out to China White that evening in honour of his birthday. We also had a Carabao Cup match against Newcastle on Wednesday, so I told him to pick a time.
“I think Manchester United had just had a winter break and a couple of weeks off so there was a better moment for him to choose to go out.”
