In the Premier League on Sunday, Liverpool easily defeated AFC Bournemouth, and Newcastle United veteran Alan Shearer was impressed.

After Liverpool’s convincing victory over AFC Bournemouth, Newcastle United and Premier League great Alan Shearer is optimistic that Liverpool would not give up in the title fight.

After sustaining an injury during the Africa Cup of Nations, Mohamed Salah returned to Anfield, the Reds announced on Sunday. On the South Coast, though, worries about where the goals would come from without him were allayed.

As Jurgen Klopp’s team persisted in their pursuit of the championship, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota both scored braces. Liverpool’s victory moved them five points clear of second place. Even so, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team still has a match to play.

Shearer discussed the outcomes of the second half of Matchday 21 with the podcast The Rest is Football, noting that the Reds achieved what might prove to be a significant victory come May. “It wasn’t a very good first half, but their strength in forward positions—even without Salah—is evident,” he said.

“Goals are something that won’t go away anytime soon—one off, one on. Last week, City and Arsenal both had strong results; now it was up to Liverpool. What can you do?

“With Bournemouth’s current form, everyone was thinking that Liverpool would have a difficult match against Bournemouth. They were amazing in the second half.”

This weekend’s Reds wowed more people than just Shearer. Andoni Iraola, the Cherries manager, had nothing but praise for Klopp’s squad after the game.

He declared, “Liverpool were really clinical.” It’s challenging to defend, especially their first goal, since it’s a pretty good combination. In terms of the other goals, I believe we might improve our defence and response time to these second balls.

“Look at Liverpool’s second-half stats—they’re incredible. They often play well in the first half but excel in the second.”
