Having experienced two of the world’s largest and most spectacular cruise ships, the author reflects on the differences between them and reveals which ship left a lasting impression worth revisiting. The voyages took place aboard two Royal Caribbean marvels: Wonder of the Seas and Icon of the Seas. Though both vessels were impressive in their own ways, only one earned the honor of being the ship the author would eagerly sail on again.

Wonder of the Seas, which debuted in 2022, is a member of Royal Caribbean’s famed Oasis-class. Known for its immense size and vibrant energy, this ship can accommodate nearly 7,000 guests across 18 decks. It’s a floating city with more to do than most resorts on land. Highlights include an ice-skating rink, rock-climbing walls, a zip line suspended over the ship’s interior, an open-air Central Park filled with greenery, and massive theater productions. The ship delivers a high-energy, entertainment-heavy experience with nonstop excitement at every corner.

During their short time on Wonder of the Seas, the author recalls being completely swept up in the nonstop motion and entertainment. The ship felt more like an amusement park than a traditional cruise, with a lively crowd and non-stop activity. While exhilarating, the atmosphere could feel overwhelming at times. Despite the grandeur, it was sometimes hard to find peace and quiet amidst all the activity.

In contrast, Icon of the Seas—the current titleholder as the largest cruise ship in the world—debuted in January 2024 and offered a very different experience. It builds upon the Oasis-class foundation but takes it to another level. It’s larger, yes, but also more thoughtfully designed. With the capacity to carry around 7,600 guests, it could easily feel chaotic, but the ship’s innovative layout avoids that problem altogether.

Icon of the Seas is divided into eight distinct “neighborhoods,” each with its own theme and atmosphere. These themed zones help manage crowds and give passengers a feeling of variety throughout the ship. There’s something for everyone: a thrilling waterpark featuring six record-setting waterslides, a tranquil adults-only retreat, a massive pool deck with the largest pool at sea, and even a suspended infinity pool with ocean views. Add to that the AquaDome, a futuristic dome offering jaw-dropping acrobatic water shows, and the first swim-up bar on a cruise ship.

What impressed the author most about Icon of the Seas wasn’t just its size or features—it was the way the ship was planned. The ship’s layout manages people flow so well that it never feels congested. Elevators are grouped logically near neighborhoods, walking routes make sense, and there’s always a quiet spot to retreat if needed. The design feels more modern, relaxing, and guest-friendly than even its spectacular predecessor.

Although Wonder of the Seas is a thrilling adventure and has every imaginable activity, Icon of the Seas strikes a better balance between excitement and comfort. The newer ship pushes cruise innovation forward while making passengers feel at ease and well taken care of.

In the end, both ships are incredible achievements in modern cruising.Wonder of the Seas dazzles with bold energy, action, and crowd-pleasing entertainment, but Icon of the Seas wins for its thoughtful layout, next-level features, and comfort-driven approach. For the author, it wasn’t just about how much there is to do—but how the experience feels from start to finish.

And for that reason, the ship they’d most look forward to sailing again is Icon of the Seas.
