The University of Kansas said Wednesday that John Hadl, a standout student who played 16 seasons in the NFL and American Football League, had passed away. He was eighty-two.

Hadl, who was up in Lawrence, Kansas, excelled as a baseball center fielder and an all-state football halfback during his high school years. He played collegiate football with the Jayhawks while remaining in his hometown, setting records as a punter, quarterback, and halfback.

(45.6 yards per punt) and established the Jayhawks’ highest interception return (98 yards) and longest punt (94 yards). Up until 2007, the interception mark and punt record were still in effect.

The Jayhawks finished in the top 20 during Hadl’s junior and senior years. In his final season, he guided the team to its first bowl victory as a program.
