In a runoff election on Tuesday, Shomari Figures, a former employee of the Obama administration’s White House, emerged victorious for the Democratic candidacy in Alabama’s 2nd District.
When The Associated Press called the contest at 9:47 p.m., Figures, who most recently worked for the Justice Department under Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, got 58 percent of the vote.
The minority leader of the state House, Anthony Daniels, who finished second in a primary last month, was defeated by him. In the 11-way primary last month, Figures received 43.5 percent of the vote, Daniels receiving 22.4 percent.
According to Federal Election Commission filings, Figures raised $416,000 up until March 31 and received more outside assistance than his opponent. Protect Progress, a super PAC with connections to the bitcoin sector, spent $917,000 either in favor of Figures or against Daniels prior to the runoff election. For the duration of the campaign, the organization gave Figures assistance totaling $2.6 million.
Prior to the runoff, Progress for Alabama spent $47,000 opposing Figures.
After Alabama was mandated to create a new map last year with the intention of giving Black voters greater control over choosing their representative, the newly created 2nd District is now available. Nathan L. Gonzales of Inside Elections has the contest pegged as Likely Democratic.
