During the first training camp practice, the Kansas City Chiefs began to fine-tune their roster. Some people were surprised to learn that the Chiefs had signed former Slippery Rock wide receiver Kyle Sheets.
Derrick Nnadi, Charles Omenihu, Joe Thuney, Jaylen Watson, and a host of other players that began training camp on the active/PUP list gave the Chiefs the opportunity to sign an experienced replacement with their final roster spot.
Rather, Kansas City discovered a young player who may develop into quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ next weapon. Wide receiver Sheets, a Division II All-American, caught 76 passes for 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns in the previous campaign.
In April, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound player signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints. But following the required minicamp, the rookie was waived by the Saints.
Head coach of Slipper Rock Shawn Lutz praised the decision to sign his former player. According to Rock Athletics, Lutz expressed his excitement for Kyle’s opportunity to learn from a coach like Andy Reid and be a member of a championship team like the Kansas City Chiefs. “He deserves the chance, and we’re excited to watch his development over the next few weeks.”
Sheets amassed 2,440 receiving yards in his four years at Slipper Rock, good for fourth-most in the school’s history. His 29 touchdown throws in his career place him third all-time.
Chiefs News:
Although signing with back-to-back Super Bowl champions after being an undrafted free agent is noteworthy, Sheets’ road to even the practice squad, let alone the final roster, is not an easy one.
“At this point, Sheets is nothing more than the 91st man on the roster,” AtoZ Sports’ Charles Goldman stated. Training camp is where he can show that he’s more than that, but he still has a ways to go. In an effort to improve the floor for that group, Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach is still rotating through the wide receiver depth on the roster, something he ought to be doing after the 2023 NFL season.
Even though Rashee Rice, who is accused of eight felonies, is set to be suspended,
Former Chiefs DT Isaiah Buggs’ open roster spot was filled by Kansas City.
Isaiah Buggs, a defensive tackle, was cut by the Chiefs last month, leaving an opening on the roster. Buggs’ sudden exit was the result of several legal problems.
On June 24, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network revealed the information.Pelissero wrote, “After his most recent arrest, Buggs’ bond was revoked and he’s currently in jail as multiple legal cases play out.” “There are more pressing concerns than football, and Kansas City is moving on.”
According to arrest documents from the Tuscaloosa County (Alabama) Sheriff’s Office, Buggs was taken into custody on June 16 and accused of second-degree burglary and domestic abuse. The Alabama alum was freed on a $5,000 bond, according to district court records, as reported by Lukas Weese of The Athletic.
