BREAKING NEWS: Water Main Burst Near Cumberland Basin Floods Roads, Shuts Down Schools and Businesses Across BS9…

**Bristol, October 17, 2022** — A major burst water main near Cumberland Basin wreaked havoc across several Bristol postcodes, including the BS9 area, early Monday morning, causing widespread flooding, travel disruption, and the closure of schools and businesses.

Bristol Water confirmed that the rupture occurred around 5:45 AM, sending thousands of gallons of water surging through nearby roads. Commuters were met with submerged junctions, impassable lanes, and severe delays, particularly along the A3029 and surrounding arterial routes connecting the Clifton and Westbury-on-Trym areas.

“This was one of the most serious bursts we’ve seen in years,” a spokesperson for Bristol Water said. “Crews were dispatched immediately, but the damage had already affected supply lines to hundreds of homes and businesses by the time we arrived.”

Schools Close, Offices Evacuated

Several local schools, including Westbury Park Primary and Henleaze Junior School, were forced to close for the day due to a lack of water and inaccessible grounds. Office buildings and retail units in BS9 also shut down, citing safety concerns and water damage.

“We arrived to find ankle-deep water in the car park,” said Louise Grant, manager of a local business on Stoke Hill. “By 9 AM, we had to send all staff home.”

Emergency Services on the Scene

Fire and Rescue teams were dispatched to assist in evacuating stranded motorists and checking on vulnerable residents. Local police issued a warning asking drivers to avoid the Cumberland Basin area and nearby roads until further notice.

Engineers worked through the day to isolate the break and restore supply to affected neighbourhoods. As of 10:00 PM, water pressure was returning to most properties, though some residents reported cloudy or discoloured water.

Community Response

Despite the chaos, residents praised the swift response by emergency services and water engineers. Local volunteers helped clear debris and direct traffic while Bristol City Council set up temporary relief points for vulnerable households.

Bristol Water Apologizes

Bristol Water issued an official apology, stating:

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and are working to ensure full restoration. A full investigation is underway into what caused the pipe to fail.
