Where (and when) will the 49ers be selecting players in the NFL Draft this year
At last, the NFL Draft is among us! Thus, the San Francisco 49ers will at last add a ton of youthful talent to their roster. The Niners, a contender attempting to maintain its elite status despite the league’s rigid pay limit, will need to continually add impact players through the draft and undrafted free agency in order to survive the departure of key players, many of whom will likely sign free agency contracts with other clubs.
Naturally, the 49ers’ ongoing contract discussions with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continue to be the major subject surrounding the team during this year’s draft, which is taking place in Detroit, Michigan. The 49ers are open to considering trade proposals for the young wideout as the two parties are still unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension. Aiyuk may be traded if a team calls on draft day and offers a compelling enough deal.
If not, the Niners will choose most of their selections on Day 3 of the draft. The 49ers have one pick in each of the first, second, and third rounds, so it makes sense that they could try to move up in the draft with their abundance of later-round selections. Granted, they most likely won’t have the money for a big move up until Day 2, barring a trade of someone like Aiyuk.
If not, the majority of the Niners’ picks will be made on Day 3 of the draft. With so many picks in the latter rounds of the draft, it makes sense that the 49ers, who have one pick in the first, second, and third rounds, would attempt to move up in the draft. Granted, until they deal for someone like Aiyuk, they probably won’t have the funds for a significant move until Day 2.
